Innovation Arts & Entertainment, along with Broadway In Chicago, are thrilled to announce single tickets for ALL THINGS EQUAL: THE LIFE AND TRIALS OF RUTH BADER GINSBURG (www.allthingsequalrbg.com), will go on sale Friday, September 25. Produced by Scott Stander, the production that has toured more than 40 cities nationwide to date, is written by multiple Award-winner Rupert Holmes and directed by Laley Lippard. The production stars Michelle Azar who originated the role. Over the course of ninety fascinating and often funny minutes, the one-woman-production presents an intimate portrayal of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a true American original. ALL THINGS EQUAL: THE LIFE AND TRIALS OF RUTH BADER GINSBURG will play Broadway In Chicago’s Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut St., Chicago) for a limited three-day engagement, January 26 – 28.

“In creating this play about her richly-lived life and hard-fought struggles, I came to ever more deeply marvel at her strength, tenacity, sly wit, and compassion,” says Holmes. “Our play also reveals the love song that ran through her remarkable life and shares the music that was her giddy delight. ALL THINGS EQUAL offers each theatregoer the chance to better know this woman, her yearning for equality, and her love for this nation's precious institutions: Ruth ... Justice ... and the American way.”

In ALL THINGS EQUAL: THE LIFE AND TRIALS OF RUTH BADER GINSBURG , Supreme Court Justice “RBG” welcomes a friend of the family to her cozy chambers to convey, over the course of ninety fascinating and often funny minutes, a sense of her life and its many trials: losing her mother the day before she graduated as valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school; being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer; fighting for women's rights in the nineteen-seventies before condescending all-male courts; and taking courageous stands for human rights as a voice of reason amid a splintering and increasingly politicized Supreme Court. An evening with a great and compassionate icon of straight-thinking American justice emerges, an RBG who is not only “notorious” but victorious as she takes a stand for ordinary people facing the many challenges of a changing world.

"We couldn't be more excited to bring Ruth Bader Ginsburg's story to even more cities in 2027," says Producer Scott Stander. "Audiences across the country have responded to this show with laughter, tears, and a renewed appreciation for what one determined person can accomplish. Her story continues to resonate, and we can't wait to share it with new audiences everywhere we go."

“Bring your scrunchies, your hankies, your humor, and your heart to this entertaining and uplifting event,” says Holmes.

Published in Upcoming Theatre

Kokandy Productions’ Jekyll & Hyde, now presented by Broadway In Chicago at the Broadway Playhouse, arrives with the momentum of a bona fide Chicago phenomenon. After its run at Chopin Theatre was extended again and again - an almost unheard of feat for an intimate, homegrown musical - the show has now been picked up for a full commercial engagement, marking a major leap for the company and a testament to the production’s electric word of mouth. It is worth noting just how rare this is: Broadway In Chicago almost never transfers storefront productions, making this pickup one of the most significant Chicago theatre success stories in recent memory. Conceived for the stage by Steve Cuden and Frank Wildhorn, this staging proves how a storefront success can scale beautifully without losing its bite.

This reimagined take on The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, drawn from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story, uses Leslie Bricusse’s book and lyrics to follow Dr. Jekyll, a brilliant yet splintering scientist whose compassion fuels his most dangerous ideas. He turns to self‑improvement experiments - attempting to isolate and remove the darker impulses that plague human behavior. Only after the town council votes down his proposal to move forward does Jekyll test his theories on himself, unleashing a violent alter ego - Mr. Hyde - that refuses to stay contained and seeks revenge on those who dismissed his ideas as reckless.

While Jekyll’s experiments drive the plot, the production grounds his unraveling in two sharply drawn relationships: his earnest, hopeful romance with Emma and his complicated, magnetic connection with Lucy. Emma represents the future he’s desperate to protect, while Lucy embodies the vulnerability and desire he can’t fully control. Together, they give the story its emotional spine, showing how Jekyll’s transformation fractures not just his identity, but the lives of the women who care for him.

Kokandy dives into the duality with sharp humor, vivid theatricality, and a pulsing score that turns the transformation into both a spectacle and a psychological spiral. As Jekyll’s world cracks - friends endangered, morality blurred, identity slipping - the production keeps the tension taut, balancing gothic thrills with a surprisingly human core.

What makes this staging stand out is its inventiveness: clever staging, bold physicality, and a cast that commits fully to the grotesque and the gorgeous – and, wow, can they sing. It’s no surprise audiences kept returning at Chopin, pushing the run far past its original closing date. That groundswell of audience demand is precisely what caught Broadway In Chicago’s attention - a level of traction strong enough to propel a storefront musical into a full commercial engagement. Seeing it now elevated to the Broadway Playhouse feels like the rare occasion when Chicago’s storefront originality gets the larger platform it deserves. In fact, upon entering, guests are handed stickers to mark how many times they’ve seen the show. Whether it’s their first visit or their seventh - the highest number I spotted - theatergoers wear it proudly, a small but telling sign of the cult‑like enthusiasm surrounding this production.

Directed by Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham, this production thrives on a razor‑sharp sense of style and drive. Van Barham shapes Jekyll & Hyde with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how to blend horror and heart into one seamless theatrical rhythm. A kinetic drive and deft wit run through the score thanks to Nick Sula’s music direction, ensuring crisp transitions and character‑focused vocal work. With a rare 15‑piece live orchestra on stage, the production’s musical power hits with a fullness and immediacy that elevates every passage. Brenda Didier’s choreography is the secret weapon — precise, playful, and radiating personality, it turns the show’s physicality into storytelling and amplifies the divide at the center of Jekyll’s collapse.

Kokandy’s ensemble fires on all cylinders, creating a production that feels both wickedly fun and sharply realized. David Moreland anchors the show with a riveting, shape‑shifting performance as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde, his vocal work and physical transformations giving the story its ferocious pulse. Moreland delivers a performance of remarkable physical and emotional intensity, one that stands out among the strongest I’ve seen. With visceral depth and vocal heat, Ava Lane Stovall shapes Lucy Harris into a woman suspended between danger and desire, her performance threading vulnerability through every moment of volatility. She makes Lucy’s internal tug of war feel immediate, giving the role a current that’s both seductive and unsettling. Meanwhile, Emily McCormick’s Emma Carew delivers a beautifully grounded counterbalance, her warm, expressive songs reinforcing the production’s moral center and offering the steadiness Jekyll’s world so desperately lacks.

(center) Ava Lane Stovall with (left to right) Quinn Kelch and Ismael Garcia and (below) Quinn Simmons in Kokandy Productions’ production of Jekyll & Hyde.

As Simon Stride and Spider, Quinn Kech moves effortlessly between clipped propriety and feral swagger, pairing sharp character work with vocals that cut cleanly through the score. A steady moral throughline comes through in Kevin Webb’s Gabriel John Utterson, his warm baritone and grounded presence giving the story its emotional ballast. Nathan Calaranan brings a dignified, resonant authority to Sir Danvers Carew, shaping each turn with clarity and restraint. Around them, the ensemble meets the material with full‑throated commitment - singing with power, acting with specificity, and charging every scene with the kind of collective intensity that makes this production feel larger than its footprint. Led by Jeff Award winners Moreland, Stovall, and McCormick, the ensemble’s collective impact makes this Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde feel vividly, thrillingly alive. The extended applause throughout the night were frequent and fully deserved.

The reimagined score is one of the production’s greatest triumphs, built on Frank Wildhorn’s music, yet reshaped into something leaner, sharper, and far more theatrical. Kim Scharnberg’s orchestrations give the music its dark, muscular edge, while Jason Howland’s arrangements sharpen its modern undercurrent. The orchestrations feel slyly contemporary and richly atmospheric, giving the story a sonic identity that matches Kokandy’s confident staging. Sula ensures every number lands with intention, whether it’s a brooding solo that tightens like a vice or an explosive ensemble sequence that floods the stage with adrenaline. And the vocal performances? They’re extraordinary – out of this world, presented with a clarity and force that elevate every musical moment.

The set evokes the grit and pressure of 1880s London without ever changing, a circular playing space with elevated risers that let the cast surround the action and heighten every moment of tension. Scenic designer Sotirios Livaditis, U.S.A., builds a world that’s intentionally fixed yet remarkably flexible, giving the ensemble multiple levels and angles to push the story forward. G. “Max” Maxin IV’s lighting and Matt Reich’s sound design sharpen that sense of immersion, shaping mood, focus, and dramatic impact from scene to scene. This talented design team gives us a unified environment that feels alive in its stillness - a single space that transforms through performance rather than mechanics.

Jekyll & Hyde comes highly recommended, not only for its inventive reworking but for the sheer theatrical command Kokandy brings to the Broadway Playhouse stage. Presented by Broadway In Chicago, the production (already extended) runs through November 8, 2026 at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place, with a runtime of 2 hours and 35 minutes including an intermission. It’s a bold, stylish, and wildly entertaining take on a classic tale - one that proves Kokandy’s storefront artistry can thrive beautifully on a commercial stage. I walked away from this production genuinely amazed, struck by how fully Kokandy has transformed a familiar title into something fresh, fearless, and alive. It’s a milestone not just for Kokandy, but for Chicago theatre itself - a reminder that the city’s most daring work can rise all the way to the downtown marquee.

Let’s face it – in today’s world, “vaccinations” are a hot-button topic. More than ever, anything around health has become highly politicized, and for some, can elicit a deeply emotional reaction. Therefore, consensus is even harder to come by, and for some, even entering the debate feels impossible.

Despite all of that, leave it to Playwright Jonathan Spector to do the impossible and turn a play about vaccinations and consensus into a laugh-out-loud comedy. If you’re anything like this Opening Night audience, you might even find yourself gasping for air as you try to work through the laughter enough to absorb whatever witty one-liner comes next.

Spector’s Eureka Day takes place at a highly progressive private school where all decisions are made by consensus. However, when a mumps outbreak takes over the school, the Executive Board is going to find that artisanal scones are not always going to provide enough band aid for differing opinions.  Chaos ensues as parents clash in opinions over vaccinations and research, leaving the community unsure of how the school will ever recover.

Directed by Lili‑Anne Brown, Eureka Day is a witty, fast‑paced production presented by TimeLine Theatre in partnership with Broadway in Chicago. The work of Brown’s talented creative team immediately transports us into an elementary school library – particularly that of Scenic Designer Collete Pollard. The combination of picture books, colorful bean bags, and small chairs is sure to leave you feeling nostalgic as you think back to a time when you perhaps inhabited spaces like this.

Brown’s production features a strong ensemble with spot-on comedic timing. PJ Powers as Don, Eureka Day’s principal, elicited great laughter at this performance through his deep need to smooth over any debate. With every sigh or pause, he had the audience in the palm of his hand – wondering how he was going to try and navigate that particular rough patch. Jürgen Hooper expertly strikes a delicate balance with his approach to Eli, a character that walks a line as he tries to embody the stereotypical “white, woke man.”  Aurora Adachi-Winter has an authentic, genuine approach to her Meiko – the mom so many of us will recognize as the one who does not want to ruffle feathers, but also only has so much farther she can be pushed before she simply has to let her anger explode.

You might find that part of the cleverness of Spector’s story is its ability to invite an audience to empathize with both sides of the vaccination debate. Much as one might expect – not every parent meets eye to eye. As the school navigates the decision on whether or not to mandate the mumps vaccine for their students, we receive a window into the personal experiences of families on both sides.

In one particular scene, it is only Suzanne (Rebekah Ward) and Carina (Gabrielle Lott-Rogers) on stage. It is clear at this point that while Carina is pro-vaccination requirements, Suzanne is very much against. There is a great deal of silence, and the discomfort can be felt in the audience. While I do not wish to give away all of the details, I can say this – both actors treat their sides of the debate with a delicate grace. There is an openness and generosity from both Lott-Rogers and Ward that allows the audience to understand where they are each coming from. Regardless of which side of the debate on which you fall, you might just find yourself moved by the scene – and the ability for both characters to let down their walls and help each other understand their side of a highly personal topic.

A witty script with a lot of heart makes Eureka Day an absolute must-see. The topic alone is timely, and the ensemble brings it to life in a way that will stick with you for days.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Eureka Day runs through February 22, 2026 at Broadway Playhouse – 175 E. Chestnut Street. For tickets and information, see the Timeline Theatre website.

All hands on deck Titanic fans! Get ready for a lavishly produced musical that boldly reimagines the Titanic story, navigating it into fresh and unforeseen waters.

The story of the "unsinkable" Titanic is one most of us know well—the ship’s ill-fated maiden voyage on April 14, 1912, ending in tragedy as it struck an iceberg and sank to the ocean's depths. Many are also familiar with the iconic film Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, which, while rooted in historical accuracy, introduced audiences to the poignant love story of Jack and Rose—two young hearts entangled in a passionate romance before disaster struck. But were the events exactly as we’ve been told? According to Celine Dion, who claims to have been there, the story might be quite different.

Alas, Broadway in Chicago and Porchlight Theatre proudly bring you Titanique—a one-of-a-kind musical comedy that's guaranteed to leave you in stitches and thoroughly entertained. Directed by Tye Blue, Titanique is an uproariously funny and gloriously campy musical parody that breathes new, unexpected life into James Cameron's beloved cinematic masterpiece, Titanic. At the helm of this delightfully absurd reimagining is none other than global superstar Celine Dion—or, at least, a larger-than-life version of her. Yes, that Celine Dion! In an inspired twist, Celine barrels her way into the heart of the story, unapologetically seizing control of Jack and Rose's ill-fated romance and retelling it as only she can. Her perspective transforms the tragic tale into a flamboyant celebration of love, loss, and diva-level drama.

But don’t expect a straight retelling! With book by Maria Mindelle, Constantine Rousoull and Tye Blue, Titanique is dripping with outrageous humor, zany antics, and more self-aware silliness than you can shake a life preserver at. This hilarious musical is powered by Celine's legendary hits—including the anthem of all anthems, "My Heart Will Go On"—woven cleverly into the narrative to deliver laugh-out-loud musical moments. Every note and every lyric is infused with heart, hilarity, and that unmistakable Celine flair. Other standout songs include the heartfelt "All By Myself," the captivating "To Love You More," and “River Deep, Mountain High.”

Part parody, part homage, Titanique is a buoyant blend of romance, comedy, and theatrical absurdity that captures the essence of '90s nostalgia while winking affectionately at its audience. It’s a showcase of over-the-top diva brilliance, a love letter to a bygone era, and an experience that is uproariously entertaining with the ridiculous factor cranked up all the way.

Titanique’s Broadway Playhouse run showcases an exceptional all-Chicago cast—and their performances are outstanding.

Let’s talk about show-stopping performances! Clare Kennedy McLaughlin sparkles as Céline Dion, delivering a perfect blend of powerhouse vocals and side-splitting humor. With a flawless mix of diva attitude and quirky charm, she captures Céline's essence in a way that makes her a true standout in this riotous spoof. From her spot-on comedic timing to her ability to belt out those iconic ballads, McLaughlin has the audience roaring with laughter - and cheering for more. Her performance is the heart and soul of Titanique—bold, delightfully campy, and unforgettable.

Adam Fane and Maya Rowe star as Jack and Rose in Titanique at Broadway Playhouse.

Adam Fane shines as Jack, captivating audiences with his charm and comic mastery. Fane’s performance effortlessly enhances the show's playful lampoon of the iconic Titanic tale. With impeccable timing and genuine emotional depth, he brings a delightful balance to his role. As Jack’s love interest, Maya Rowe infuses the role of Rose with vibrant energy, delivering a performance that is both engaging and hilariously on-point. Her portrayal seamlessly complements the show's whimsical and irreverent spirit, showcasing her knack for humor while preserving the heart of her character. Rowe's charm and comedic brilliance make her a standout in this unsinkable production.

The ensemble cast of Titanique is an absolute joy, bursting with energy, humor, and incredible talent in this gut-busting musical comedy. Each performer adds their own unique touch, coming together as a dynamic force that fuels the show’s hilarity and charm. Abbey C. Smith delivers a triumphant vocal performance as Molly Brown, while Lorenzo Shawn Parnell dazzles with his remarkable voice as both The Seaman and the Iceberg. Rob Lindley, as Rose’s mother Ruth, earned some of the loudest laughs of the night, with Adrian Aguilar as Cal and Jackson Evans portraying both Luigi and Victor Garber adding to the show’s irresistible humor.

The scenic and costume design of Titanique is truly remarkable. The neon-lit iconic Titanic staircase draws audiences into a fantastical world that beautifully aligns with the show’s cheeky and whimsical vibe. The costumes are just as outstanding, showcasing a perfect mix of creativity and humor that bring the characters to life in a visually striking way. Together, the scenic and costume design craft an immersive atmosphere that amplifies the charm and playful extravagance of this remarkable production.

Completing the checklist, the Broadway Playhouse in Downtown Chicago offers an ideal venue to immerse yourself in the magic of Titanique. Warm and intimate, the theater offers exceptional sightlines from every seat, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the performance and feel fully connected to the on-stage magic.

For a musical comedy, Titanique checks all the right boxes, offering a delightful experience that's worth enjoying again and again. Take the plunge with Titanique!

*Don't bring the little kiddos! There's a good reason the musical's website suggests a 13+ audience. Titanique contains sexual innuendo and adult language.

Performed at Broadway Playhouse through July 13th. For more tickets and/or show information, click here.

I absolutely adored Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue directed by Eric Swanson, now playing at Broadway Playhouse. Having grown up in Miami, Florida with my working single mom when the show actually began airing, the Golden Girls have always been a nostalgic favorite for me. The only stage creations I've seen of Golden Girls have all been done in drag by some of the best drag actors and actresses in Chicago, so I was pleasantly surprised with this beautifully casted production to see the fantastic accuracy and sense of humor that came alive in this very funny and fast paced take on our four golden heroes.

“It’s not an old episode, it’s a brand-new show,” said Vince Kelley, who plays Blanche said in an interview with WTTW. “Sophia is out on bail looking to make money. Rose and Blanche have started a new hookup app for seniors to meet. Through the app, Dorothy finds a younger man and experiences a new romance.” Kelley continued, “Did you watch Sex and the City or Girlfriends? They wouldn’t even exist. There wouldn’t even be that four-character type show without the Golden Girls.”

This new play is based on Golden Girls, the mega-popular TV series about four retired women living together that ran from the mid-eighties through the early nineties. The show helped pave the way for women in leading roles and has gained more and more popularity with generation after generation. The wonderful thing about the original TV show created by the brilliant writers Susan Harris and Paul Junger Witt, is the way it brought to light the problems, pitfalls and joys of aging in ways that were insightful, touching and hilarious. This production which is set in 2023 written by Robert Leleux takes the time to illustrate several important issues facing seniors today.

In this story, Sophia has been arrested for selling marijuana brownies and LSD laced cakes to her fellow senior citizens at the nearby senior assisted living facility and gives a wonderful speech about why she should not be sent to jail for "rolling a few joints for those of her friends who have glaucoma" or selling LSD cakes to otherwise terminally bored and serious seniors who want to get over their fear of death.

Rose and Blanche have created a hugely successful app for "horny seniors" called “Creakin’” because the alert sound is hysterically the sound of creaking bones. The girls hope to pay Sophia’s legal fees with the money they make from the app. Blanche declares with a sexy sigh, "You have no idea how many of them there ARE!!" It's a sound idea, actually. My mother spent eighteen years in various senior facilities and dating of any kind let alone sexual contact within each facility was very difficult and limited by their tiny community and inability to meet new people.

Dorothy just happens to use the app and swipes right on a younger man, Burt, who falls in love with her and offers her a whole new life as a star if she moves to New York with him! Dorothy’s younger love interest’s sincere sexual and intellectual attraction to her is not played off as a joke. It is played as a very exciting and mutually fulfilling meeting of minds and bodies in late life.

This cast is downright stellar. Vince Kelley as Blanche is mind-blowing. Kelley is an absolute scene stealer with all of Blanche's overt sex appeal and unabashed libertine wildness. Adam Graber is an unbelievably beautiful and adorable Rose recreating with seeming ease and beauty the glorious comic timing of Betty White. Ryan Bernier, as Dorothy, has all of Bea Arthur's dry humor and intelligence and wisdom and even her subtle sexiness down pat while Christopher Kamm as Sophie hits on one-liner after one-liner. The transformation Kamm goes through to take on the role of Sophia in incredible in itself. Also commanding a good number of hearty laughs is Jason Bowen who plays dual roles of both Stanley, Dorothy’s ex-husband, and Burt, her new lover. The entire cast should be awarded for their performances which go beyond camp and into sincere tribute to each of the wonderful actresses who created these evergreen characters, Betty White, Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty and Rue McClanahan.

Yes, it takes great writers to create a show with this kind of universal and lasting appeal, but actresses are so often made to feel that they are replaceable, interchangeable and downright un-castable after the age of 35, and Arthur, White, McClanahan and Getty helped change that.

The degree to which these talented actors have recreated and brought back to life the work of four of the  greatest comediennes of ANY generation moved me so much because it demonstrated that the huge and long lasting success of this show hinged not just on the greatness of its writers, it absolutely was the result of the outstanding work of four actresses, who were always irreplaceable, never interchangeable and eminently castable well into their golden years.

I highly recommend this production.

Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is being performed at Broadway Playhouse at Water Place through May 26th. For tickets and/or more show information, click here.

STOMP – A DEEP DIVE INTO THE LIFE OF A STOMPER

For three decades, STOMP has captivated crowds with its dynamic percussion beats and mesmerizing performers. The sensational stage show is presently on a National Tour across the United States and has made a stop at Chicago’s Broadway Playhouse! By seamlessly combining dance and performance with music generated from ordinary found items like matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, plastic barrels, and even the kitchen sink, STOMP offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience that you absolutely shouldn't overlook.

Buzz Center Stage had the unique opportunity to interview John Gavin, a long-time member of the STOMP cast. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in music from New York University. He has been with STOMP since 2017.

Drummer/percussionist John Gavin stars in STOMP now being performed at Broadway Playhouse.

John, thank you for agreeing to this interview. How did you get involved in STOMP?

Sure. I took an audition for STOMP in 2017 in New York. I had recently moved to New York the year before to start grad school at New York University. Halfway through the year my professor sent out an email to the percussion studio saying the producers were holding auditions at the theater, and strongly encouraged the percussion studio to audition. I knew a performer who had previously been part of the show, and thanks to the NYU network, I managed to connect with them. They shared insights about the show, highlighted key aspects to focus on during the audition, and provided some helpful pointers. Despite the guidance, I had to put in the effort, attend the audition, and showcase my abilities. The support from NYU's alumni network and community played a significant role in facilitating the entire process. I auditioned and progressed through multiple rounds of the audition process. They had me work with additional props to see how well I did as well as in different situations with different performers to stretch my ability to adapt and think ahead and retain information. From that audition process, I moved through the rounds and got offered a rehearsal contract where I was taught the show by rote and learned piece by piece from the training cast. They taught me the parts of the show and I learned my role while still getting evaluated. This happens before you get put into a show.

You're finally put into a show after weeks and months from the very first audition. It takes a long time to get it into your body and learn the choreography and learn the music. If you're lucky enough to have made it that far, you'll keep developing your show and keep honing your craft. And I've been doing that since 2017, still learning new roles and learning new characters, still having just as much fun as the first day I picked up a broom.

So, the show evolves on a regular basis?

That's the thing. It will start with an idea. They will start an idea with a prop or an object, and how can we make sound out of this? Where is the sound? And then from that sound, how can we elaborate on it? How can we change it? How can we make it more interesting? What are other ways we can play it or flip it or spin it, or exhaust all the sound capabilities and visual capabilities of that object into the show? And that's what keeps people engaged. If they're longtime fans of the show, if they see it again, they'll see these new props. We have two new numbers since the last time we were in Chicago. Even the old numbers are always getting edited if a new performer comes in and maybe puts their own spin on it.  That's how the show has new life and every generation that comes in, every new cast will have their own background and have their own experiences that they will put into the show as well. And that keeps it fresh.

Great. The show seems very energetic. A lot of energy is expended on stage. Do you have any kind of workout regime to keep your energy up?

We put a lot of emotion and passion into the show because first and foremost. We have a lot of fun with it. We really love our jobs. We really love bringing this kind of art form to the people of Chicago, to the people of the United States, Canada and Mexico. As soon as I get on stage or as soon as the lights come up, or as soon as I hear the music, I can't explain it, but it still gives me energy.

These same rhythms I've been hearing for years that I've been playing for years are just as exciting as the first time I heard them.

For me and other performers going to the gym, lifting weights, running, a lot of stretching, and yoga or maybe Pilates helps the body move more naturally and ergonomically in the show. I like to go to the gym at whatever hotel we're staying at and lift weights. Nothing too extreme of course, but something to allow me to build up a little bit of strength and stamina and endurance so that when I get into the show, my body is not totally exhausted. I still always want to have a little gas in the tank for the very end of the show. It builds and climaxes in this big number that I still must have something to give. Musically, I'm always practicing. I always travel with my drumsticks and drum pad.  I have a bunch of books with different exercises, and I play with the metronome. I'm always working my hands.

That's always a part of my routine, it keeps me focused and interested and always trying to develop new things, like I'm going to try a new stick trick tonight, or I'm going to try playing a different solo. Keeping it interesting for us as a performer also makes it feel fresh.

Tell me, who are some of the people you look up to, the people that molded you?

For sure. Well, first and foremost, I've always had a great family. I was blessed with two loving parents and an amazing sister who always instilled love in my life and made the world feel so accepting, loving and fun. Even with my extended family, my aunts and uncles, I'm very close with my cousins. I still have a grandmother and I love every moment that I get to share with her. The foundation I had growing up with allowed me to go at life without really being afraid of anything because I knew I had their love and support no matter what.

From there, I've been blessed with some amazing educational opportunities. I've had some great teachers in my day from English class, even to math class, music and band. I had some great professors in college that really expanded my mind and repertoire and abilities and really pushed me in the right way.  I attribute all the knowledge I have to any teacher that was patient enough with me and was able to give me a chance to see my potential. Having a good teacher is pivotal or having a good mentor as we grow up is important for young people. My cast, I feel very lucky to be working with them. It doesn't feel like work. It feels like fun because they're laughing and we're having a good time with each other. We're playing off each other's choices on stage, and it really feels like a family and a community.

How long is this tour and how do you manage being on tour for so long?

Sure. Oh, I'd also like to say I have a wife. I got married last year. I have an amazing support system in my wife that also answers this next question. Her love and acceptance for what I do and her patience with my career is also extremely pivotal and important in my life to give me that backbone and give me that foundation. We started the tour in October, and we're going until the middle of June. This is long as far as STOMP tours go in North America, hitting various cities, both big and small from both coasts, a couple of cities in Canada as well, we're really looking forward to being with our northern neighbors.

We'll have what we call layoffs. So, for example, after this run here in Chicago, we're all being sent back home to our point of origin, which is different for each cast member. Some of us are from New York City, like me, some are from San Diego, some are from Fort Lauderdale, some are from North Carolina... At home, different people will do different things. Some people will take a break to rest their mind and body. Some of us might pick up some temp work. I like to teach and spend time in classrooms on my time off. Some people will practice or can continue to network during those times off. And it's typically about a week or two weeks, and it's a great time to kind of connect with loved ones and allow yourself to heal and freshen up and get a lot of errands and chores done.

It can be hard. Traveling is tough on the body. Air travel can be stressful nowadays. We are often on the bus for a long time if the cities are a far distance. In a lot of cramped quarters, making sure that you don't lose anything. You're bringing a lot of your valuables with you, passports, laptops, these things can get lost or stolen. That all adds to the stress of tour life and it's on you. Even though we're traveling as a company, and a company does a great job at taking care of that, you still must navigate a new city. You must be safe and thoughtful about your surroundings. During those layoffs, it is nice to reset and take a breath for yourself before you go out for maybe another six or eight weeks or however long it is.

Sounds interesting.

But it's an adventure too. It's an adventure, which makes it fun and gives life, because we all know it's not forever. We can't do this until we retire. There's no way. It's too hard on the body. So, all of us are very grateful, myself included, for these opportunities, for these moments and connections. We’re really looking forward to our time here in Chicago.

You mentioned something I find interesting, what do you plan on doing after STOMP?

Great question. Yeah, so I still have a lot of dreams and music and goals within music. I still have a whole career ahead of me in terms of performing arts. On the other side of that, I'm really interested in teaching. I have a degree in education. I think education is very important in our society and in daily life, and I have a great respect for it and admiration for great teachers and the work they do. So, I would also like to be a part of that, and hopefully one day have my own classroom and have my own private studio and have my own set of students that I can shape and mold and impact in a positive way for them to go and take something in their life and make something special on their own. That's another project that's down the road, but what I'm hoping to continue after STOMP.

That's beautiful, John. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful tour. Happy holidays to you, your family, and your friends.

Don't miss STOMP!
