Break out your Burn Book and mark these dates: Aurora’s Paramount Theatre is launching its 15th Broadway Series with the Chicago-area premiere of Mean Girls, August 26-October 11, 2026. Opening Night is Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m.

Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, Mean Girls is the Broadway sensation that’s so fetch, it rules the school.

Based on Tina Fey’s iconic Paramount Pictures film, Mean Girls is the story of Cady Heron, a sweet and smart new girl who’s just moved from Africa to Chicago’s North Shore. When she enters the wild world of North Shore High, she quickly finds herself tangled up with The Plastics, the school’s most popular - and ruthless - clique led by queen bee Regina George. As Cady tries to fit in, she learns that popularity comes with a price. And revenge can get ugly fast.

With a book by Tina Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Neil Benjamin, Mean Girls gets an A+ for big laughs, bold, campy style, unforgettable pop-rock songs, and a message that is surprisingly honest. It’s a fresh, colorful must-see for anyone who’s ever tried to find their place in the crowd. So grab your friends, wear pink (on Wednesdays, of course), and experience the non-stop, fun-loving musical that proves even the fiercest frenemies can find redemption.

Devon Hayakawa, after serving on the directing teams of South Pacific, Come From Away, Cats, and Disney’s Frozen, makes their Paramount solo directing debut with Mean Girls. Their top-tier creative team includes choreographer Kasey Alfonso (Come From Away, Jeff Award-winner, Cats), veteran Paramount Broadway Series music director and conductor Kory Danielson, set designer Milo Bue (Come From Away) and costume designer Kotryna Hilko (Peter and the Starcatcher).

On stage, Cady Heron will be played by Elizabeth Stenholt, familiar to Paramount audiences as Olive in The 25th Anniversary Putnam County Spelling Bee (Jeff-nominated, Performer in a Supporting Role), Medium Alison in Fun Home (winner, Jeff Award, Performer in a Supporting Role), and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.

Dariana Mullen, coming off The Great Gatsby at New York’s Broadway Theatre, makes her Chicago debut as Cady’s arch nemesis, Regina George. The cast also features Angel Alzeidan as Gretchen Wieners, Julia Hope Budd as Karen Smith, Diego Vazquez Gomez as Aaron Samuels, Lucy Godinez as Janis Sarkisian, Steven Klenk as Damian Hubbard, Ben Mathew as Kevin G, Veronica Garza as Mrs. Heron/Ms. Norbury/Mrs. George, and Austin Nelson Jr. as Principal Duvall.

Overshadowed Theatrical Productions announced their 2026-2027 season entitled “Ordinary People, Extraordinary Moments,” which includes five main stage productions and special events.

Kicking off the season is an original play written by Artistic Director Reba Hervas entitled “Flame of Fire.” The story is inspired by "Operation Auca," a mission to make peaceful contact with an Ecuadorian tribe. Remembering the events 70 years later, this dramatic play follows missionaries Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, and Roger Youderian and their wives as they bravely prepare for what would change their lives forever. Auditions for this empowering tale will be held on Tuesday, July 28.

For the Christmas season, Overshadowed will present the beloved “It’s a Wonderful Life,” adapted by Jason LeBlanc from the film by Frank Capra. This cherished story follows George Bailey as he discovers the most precious gift thanks to some heavenly help by a quirky angel trying to earn his wings. The film turns 80 years old this year.

In January, the season continues with the family-oriented “James and the Giant Peach (TYA).” Adapted from Roald Dahl's book, this musical follows the adventures of a young boy and his strange new friends as they travel in a giant peach to New York. Book by Timothy Allen McDonald with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for "Dear Evan Hansen."

The spring will feature a rare Agatha Christie mystery, “The Stranger.” Considered a lost play until 2019, this intriguing tale will have audiences on the edge of their seats as a woman’s whirlwind romance takes a turn when she discovers something about her husband’s past.

The season wraps with the Tony Award-winning “Titanic” with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. This beautiful musical delivers powerful emotional moments and soaring songs that bring history to life.

The season will also include the return of Shakespeare on the Grass, a partnership with the City of Itasca. “A Midsummer Night's Dream” will be presented on August 15 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at 201-261 S. About the Production

Inspired by the painting, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter, Georges Seurat, won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for an astounding ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

"Sunday in the Park with George was one of the first shows I pitched to direct when interviewing to join the company back in 2018," says Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham. "It's almost a decade later and we're finally visiting this astonishing masterpiece. It feels like the right time. The show offers us a chance to reflect on what we've been creating and to look forward at what we still hope to achieve – both as a company and as individual artists. Sunday reminds us not to linger too much on the future or the past, but to focus on the present moment, to connect with each other in real space and time. What a gift that will be. What a gift it is to be together in a room, taking in a piece of art, having communal and singular experiences at the same time."

Studebaker Theater (Erica Berger and Jacob Harvey), P3 Productions (Ben Holtzman, Sammy Lopez, and Fiona Howe Rudin) and Audible, in collaboration with Teatro Vista Productions, present the Chicago premiere of the acclaimed new musical Mexodus, written and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, choreographed by Tony Thomas, and directed by David Mendizábal.

Mexodus plays a limited three-week run this fall at Chicago's historic Studebaker Theater at the Fine Arts Building (410 S. Michigan Avenue) beginning November 6, 2026. Tickets go on sale next month at MexodusMusical.com.

The Chicago premiere follows the musical's critically acclaimed twice-extended run at Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre in New York in 2025 and current return Off-Broadway engagement at the Daryl Roth Theatre. Mexodus is now available as an Audible Original, featuring the entire musical recorded in immersive Dolby Atmos sound design and extending its reach to millions of listeners around the world.

The Studebaker Theater engagement of Mexodus represents a homecoming for Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson. Quijada is from the Chicago area, and Robinson also lived in the city. An early workshop and developmental performances of the musical were held in Chicago in 2021 and 2023.

Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson said, "We couldn't be more excited to bring Mexodus to Chicago. Not only do we both have connections to the city, but much of the development of Mexodus happened there. Chicago, pull up!"

"The season's first must-see musical" (The Wrap), Mexodus reveals a hidden chapter of American history. You know the story of the Underground Railroad that ran North, but this show takes you on the path that ran South by crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico. "[An] electrifying theatrical experience" (The New York Times) created and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, this groundbreaking live-looped musical follows a freedom seeker and an unlikely ally as they forge a remarkable bond that transcends borders.

Ben Holtzman, Sammy Lopez, and Fiona Howe Rudin of P3 Productions said, "After building such a strong community around the show in New York City, we're thrilled to now bring this bold, original musical to Chicago audiences, especially at the historic Studebaker Theater. It's an honor to continue sharing the show's joy, energy, and message of solidarity with a city that feels so deeply connected to the spirit of Mexodus."

Kate Navin, Audible Head of Creative Development for North America, said: "It has been an honor to share Mexodus with the world, through the Audible Original release and on stage in New York, where it once again took the city by storm. We can't wait to present Brian and Nygel's groundbreaking musical in Chicago, where this work was nurtured during its development. As the production reaches more cities across the United States and listeners globally through Audible, we're continuing to broaden and honor this important story for audiences both in the theater and beyond."

Fine Arts Building and Studebaker Theater Proprietor Erica Berger said, "We are beyond proud to be a Co-Producer on Mexodus, one of the most exciting new musicals in recent memory. Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson are two exceptional artists with strong ties to Chicago. The Studebaker Theater has been a creative home to innovative theater artists for more than 125 years, and bringing Mexodus home to Chicago further emphasizes our commitment to that legacy." Managing Artistic Director Jacob Harvey added, "We're actively building new pathways for how commercial productions can find a home in Chicago. Mexodus is our first co-producer credit on an Off-Broadway production, but it won't be the last. This is a new era for the Studebaker, cementing us as the premier Chicago venue for developmental and acclaimed productions alike."

Artistic Director Wendy Mateo of Teatro Vista Productions said, "Teatro Vista Productions cultivates the telling of stories that accurately reflect our community and increase the authentic representations of us on stage and screen. We are extremely honored to have been a part of the world premieres of Brian's Where Did We Sit on the Bus? and Somewhere Over the Border. When a daughter makes a life-altering confession to her mother, their ordinary evening exchange gives way to a breathtaking roller coaster ride—gripping, profoundly relevant and "more harrowing than even its plot suggests" (The New York Times). With unblinking honesty, Emmy Award-winner Michael Pressman directs this profound reckoning about choice, care and what it means to be truly heard.

But when no guests arrive, the evening unravels into a darkly funny collision of money and marriage that asks what we are prepared to normalize in exchange for belonging. Susan V. Booth directs this smart, searing new satire that serves up a slice of privilege and power from "one of the best playwrights in Chicago. Or maybe the country. ABOUT THE GOODMAN

Since 1925, The Goodman has been a theatrical home for artists and a gathering space for Chicagoland, where bold stories spark connection, conversation and change. Now, as it enters its second century, The Goodman builds on that legacy with an eye toward the future. Under the leadership of Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins, the theater continues to champion new work—following hundreds of plays developed and a national reputation for commissioning and premiering original stories by living writers—while reimagining classics and produce large-scale musicals.

But The Goodman's reach today extends beyond its home in the heart of the Loop. From the intimate magic of The Magic Parlour, now in its third year, to the boundary-pushing world of Theater of the Mind—an immersive experience that blurs the lines between science, storytelling and sensation—and from citywide initiatives like 100 Free Acts of Theater to partnerships with artists and companies across Chicago and around the world, The Goodman is expanding what theater can be, and where it can live.

At its core, The Goodman is driven by a belief that a more empathetic, more connected city is built one story at a time. Generation-spanning productions and programs offer theater for a lifetime—from babies and young children to teens, adults and seniors—including Theater for the Very Young (ages 0–5) and the beloved annual A Christmas Carol, which has welcomed audiences for five decades. Education and Engagement programs, led by Clifford Director Jared Bellot and based in the Alice Rapoport Center, use the tools of theater to spark imagination, reflection and belonging—reaching thousands each year, the majority from underserved communities.

With nearly 200 world or American premieres, two Pulitzer Prizes, 22 Tony Awards and nearly 200 Joseph Jefferson Awards, The Goodman remains a defining force in American theater—and the first to produce all 10 plays of August Wilson's American Century Cycle. The theater also frequently serves as a production partner—from national and international companies to Chicago's Off-Loop theaters—to help amplify a wide range of theatrical voices.

Founded by William O. Goodman and his family in memory of playwright Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, the theater carries forward a legacy of artistic ambition and civic generosity. With the help of Mr. Goodman's descendants—Albert Ivar Goodman and his late mother, Edith-Marie Appleton—that spirit continues to shape its future as The Goodman expands its impact across Chicago and beyond. Marsha Cruzan is Chair of the Goodman Theatre Board of Trustees; Diane Landgren is Women's Board President; and Kelli Garcia is president of the Scenemakers Board for Young Professionals.

The Goodman stands on the unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations—and acknowledges the many other Nations for whom this land now called Chicago has long been home, including the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Kickapoo, and Mascouten. The Goodman is proud to partner with the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum (Gichigamiin-Museum.org) and the Center for Native Futures (CenterForNativeFutures.org)—organizations devoted to honoring Indigenous stories, preserving cultural memory, and deepening public understanding.

Chicago’s Shattered Globe Theatre announced today that Ian Frank has been selected, following a national search, to be the company’s new Producing Artistic Director.

Frank comes to Shattered Globe from Mudlark Theater in Evanston, where he has been the Executive Director since 2023.

“On behalf of the Shattered Globe Theatre Board of Directors and Ensemble, I am delighted to welcome Ian back to the ‘rehearsal room’ after honing his administrative skills over the past few years,” said Sara Mushlitz, Shattered Globe Board President and Search Committee Chair. “Ian has a profound respect for Shattered Globe’s history, its storefront performance landscape and most of all a commitment to Ensemble-led theater and the Shattered Globe community that has thrived as an Ensemble for 35 years. With a strong artistic voice and experience in Chicago theater, a collaborative perspective and a passion to create meaningful work, Ian will help steward Shattered Globe into its next chapter.”

“From a large pool of highly qualified candidates enthusiastic to contribute to this new chapter of Shattered Globe, Ian Frank rose to the top,” added Shattered Globe Ensemble Member Leslie Ann Sheppard. “We are excited to have him join the team and legacy of SGT."

"I’m deeply honored to be entrusted with Shattered Globe’s remarkable legacy, embodied by Sandy Shinner’s leadership and the commitment to uplifting the art by uplifting the artists who make it,” said Frank.

Frank is an award-winning stage director, adapter, and arts leader. Frank directed Frankenstein (Jeff Awards — Best Production, Best Director) for Remy Bumppo Theatre where he helped produce more than 15 mainstage productions as the Associate Artistic Director from 2015-2021. Other Chicago directing credits include Private Lives (Raven Theatre), Incident at Vichy (Jeff Nomination - Best Ensemble), Another Bone and Shipwrecked! (Redtwist), and Bob: A Life in Five Acts (LiveWire). Regionally, Frank directed Remix 38 at the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville where he has a long history of collaboration, starting as an Acting Apprentice in 2004. His work has also taken him to Milwaukee Rep, The Kennedy Center, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Frank holds an MFA in Directing from The Theatre School at DePaul University and has returned to direct several times. He has also directed at his undergraduate alma mater, Centre College, and at the University of South Carolina. His adaptation of The Call of the Wild was produced at the University of Montana in 2022. Frank has extensive experience on both the artistic and producing side of theater, including working in the Chicago office of Actors’ Equity Association. He came to Chicago in 2008, and now lives in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood with his wife, actor Emily Tate, their son, Baxter, and their dog, Alba.

Frank’s predecessor, Chicago theater veteran Sandy Shinner, announced she was stepping down after 13 years serving as Shattered Globe’s first-ever Producing Artistic Director. Shinner will remain a Shattered Globe Ensemble Member and looks forward to continuing working with SGT as a director and advisor on future projects.

"Collaborating with the multi-talented SGT Ensemble has been a highlight of my career,” said Shinner. “I’m extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together, including creating nearly 30 memorable productions, increasing salaries for artists, building a staff and relationships with new playwrights, directors, actors and designers, growing our unique Protégé training program, and launching SGT’s new play development program, our Global Playwrights Series.”

Currently, Shattered Globe is presenting its 35th season finale, Eelpout!, a world premiere comedy by Paul W. Kruse, directed by Jeremy Ohringer. When best friends Sven and Ole come together to celebrate at an ice-fishing bachelor party on a frozen lake in Minnesota, an unexpected confession hooks into deeper truths, along with a talking fish. Performances run through May 30 at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. Tickets are $20-$60. For tickets and information, visit sgtheatre.org.
